Fujairah - Leading bunker port. |
It is somewhat ironic that out of a conflict such as the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, one of the world's leading bunker ports was born. Fujairah, one of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) most scenic emirates, suddenly found itself ideally placed to serve the numerous vessels queuing up in the Gulf of Oman awaiting safe passage through the Straits of Hormuz. Since it was established as a port in 1982, Fujairah has not only become one of the leading bunker ports in the world, rivalling Rotterdam and Singapore, it is also a thriving container port and an increasingly popular call for cruise lines. Undoubtedly Fujairah's greatest asset is its location. Strategically close to the entrance to the Persian Gulf, Fujairah enjoys passing traffic of between 35,000 and 45,000 vessels per year. Many of these vessels, particularly tankers, find themselves anchored off Fujairah's coastline awaiting employment in the Gulf, making Fujairah an ideal call not only for bunkers but all other maritime services. Fujairah has been quick to maximise its position. Today, it is home to countless companies serving the maritime industry including ship agencies, classification societies, and surveyors, as well as oil treatment facilities, including slop collection and processing, and sludge treatment. Good weather conditions and calm seas ensure uninterrupted services all year round. In addition, local refineries, good deep-water anchorages close to the shore, and no calling costs make it easy to see how Fujairah has gained its place on the bunker map. |
